Art 102: History and Appreciation of Art II

Overview

 

This class is intended as an introduction to the History of Art from the late Middle Ages to the present. You will learn the vocabulary of art history as well as how architecture and art reflect their historical contexts. 

You will learn by watching and listening to my narrated power point lectures, discussing topics with your classmates, visiting art-related websites and writing a short paper.

What you learn in this course will help you to appreciate works of art.  It it my intention that you leave this class with a greater understanding of art and architecture and are able to take greater pleasure in the art that surrounds us everyday.

Objectives

 


If you complete this course and do well, you will be able to:

  • Identify stylistic characteristics of the various historical periods from the Early Renaissance to the present.

  • Correctly define (and use in a sentence) art historical terminology.

  • Describe the various visual elements of artworks as well as be able to use these concepts to analyze and evaluate works of art.

  • Describe the technical processes involved in the creation of works of art.
  • Identify key works of art on an exam.
  • Critically compare and contrast works of art on an essay exam or essay assignment.

  • Identify key movements and national characteristics of artworks.

Your course grade will be determined by your performance on the following requirements:

Requirement Points Assigned (600 Total)
3 Exams  300 pts (100 pts each)
1 Paper  100 pts
10 Discussion Essays  100 pts (10 pts each)
10 Essay Responses  50 pts (5 pts each)
15 Quizzes  90 pts (6 pts each)
Introduction Activity 10 pts
Extra Credit Activities 20 pts (10 pts each)

Your final grade will be based on the following scale. Please note that you must also pass at least 2 of the 3 exams in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.

Exams

 


There are 3 online exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 


1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
