ART 116: Design for Web I (3 Credits)

Overview

 

This is an introductory web site design course; basic design understanding will be taught. Students will learn the proper knowledge and skills for creating web page design through the understanding of web editor software and graphics software. Students will site idea develop their designs for use on deciding the purpose of the site and implementing it. Students will learn the importance of efficient web sites based on function, aesthetics, and web design techniques. Students will assess web sites for efficiencies and inefficiencies and relay their reasoning. A web site design will be completed throughout the course and will be evaluated at the mid- point and end of the semester on their designs and the criteria established.

What you learn in this course will benefit you by allowing you to design and develop effective web design, as well as the process for implementation on a remote server.

Prerequisites

The following are required for entry into this course:

  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Must have continuous access to Photoshop/Fireworks CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3.
  • Internet access.

If you complete this course and do well, you will be able to:

  • Develop the basic principles and foundations of web design, including typography, imagery, and color.
  • Examine how the principles and foundations when combined create effective layouts.
  • Utilize the industry standard software in creating web sites.
  • Develop organizational skills for material, concepts and planning of web designs.
  • Develop ideas into functioning designs.
  • Compare and contrast effective and ineffective designs.
  • Create graphics that will function in a web design.
  • Create and implementation a functioning web site.

Assignment
Points
Percentage of Grade
Weekly Assignments 5 points will be given for completion of work. The assignment needs to be completed in full to receive the 5 points; otherwise 0 points will be given. For a total of 40 points
Site Idea Development 0 - 10 points will be given for complete explanation, along with mapped out pages, answers to questions, and storyboard of design thoughts. For a total of 10 points
Web Site Assessment Exam 0 - 10 points will be given based on explanation in written statements.
For a total of 10 points
Mid-point review of site design 0 - 10 points will be given for the mid-point review.
  • The review will be looking at design direction, use of the technology and advancement of the project.
For a total of 10 points
Final Web Site Design 0 - 50 points will be given for including criteria. Points will be taken off for missing criteria, inefficient function, poor quality graphics, meeting the deadline and poor aesthetics.
  • Grading for final website:
  • Function and logical layout 8 points
  • Content (readability and information) 7 points
  • Navigation 9 points
  • Linking (internal and external) 9 points
  • Aesthetics (quality of graphics (artwork and photos), design quality of each page,
    overall look and feel) 12 points
  • Uploading of completed site by deadline. 5 points
For a total of 50 points
Discussion Forums 0-5 points will be given for the online discussions. Points will be awarded based on participation. For a total of 30 points
Final Exam 0 - 10 points will be given based on explanation in written statements. For a total of 10 points

Exams

 

There are 2 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
