CHM 112: COLLEGE CHEMISTRY II (4 CREDITS)

Overview

 

CHM 112 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors.  It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry. 

Prerequisites for CHM 112 is satisfactory completion of CHM 111(or its equivalent).

In order to succeed in this online course, you also must be comfortable working with technology. At a minimum, you must possess the following technical skills:

  • Ability to use the Internet in an effective and efficient manner, including installation and management of browser plug-ins and add-ons.
  • Basic knowledge about the operation of a computer, file management, and software installation.
  • Working knowledge of the Blackboard learning management system.

CHM 112 requires attendance at six (6) campus lab sessions to complete twelve (12) in-person labs. Dates, times, and locations are published in the NOVAConnect Student Information System for each CHM 112 section. There are no make-up lab dates.

Course Objectives

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe properties of solids and liquids and types of intermolecular forces in solids and liquids
  • Describe and interpret Phase diagrams
  • Apply the concepts and perform calculations involving various concentration units, Colligative properties, Equilibrium, Reaction rates, Aqueous equilibria, Free energy, Cell potentials, Nernst equation.
  • Predict the effect of various stresses on equilibrium systems.
  • Outline the properties of acids, bases, and buffers and perform calculations to measure the pH of such solutions.
  • Perform calculations using the solubility product and estimate the solubility of a substance.

To pass CHM 112 (grade of D or higher), the exam average, the quiz average and the lab grade average must each be equal to or greater than 60%. The mandatory on-campus labs must be completed in order to pass the course.
