DRF 201 : Computer Aided Drafting and Design (4 Credits)

Overview

Welcome to DRF 201, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, offered by the Extended Learning Institute of Northern Virginia Community College.

In this course you will learn Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) applications, concepts and techniques as applied to completing, from beginning to end, any 2 Dimensional (2D) drawing.

The primary teaching/learning modality will be via video clips.  In addition to the video clips there will be exercises that address the ideas, concepts and techniques of the associated session; a project, selected by you with guidance from me; and communication with me and other learners.  There will be a number of quizzes designed to re-enforce what you have learned as well as two written tests.

What you learn in this course will benefit you by providing knowledge and skills in the operation and application of a CAD system.

Prerequisites

One or more of the following is strongly recommended for entry into this course:

  • Competency in basic technical drafting.
  • Prerequisite is Engineering Graphics (EGR 115); Architectural Drafting I (ARC 121); or equivalent.
  •  Approval by the Instructor.

Objectives

 

The goals of this course are to:

  • Be familiar with computer applications of drafting.
  • Have a working knowledge of a CAD system and its peripherals.
  • Begin to develop proficiency as a CAD operator.
  • Develop overall drafting skills.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Analyze routine business transactions and events, record them in journals and ledgers, summarize recorded data, determine effects of internal value changes within the business enterprise, and prepare financial statements.
  • Apply accounting theories and practices relevant to the management of personal and career finances.

Recommended Textbooks and Materials

The recommendeded textbook for this course:

  •  USING AUTOCAD BASICS 2008 Grabowski - ISBN-13-978-1-4283-1159-6

An AutoCAD version 2006 or 2007 textbook is also acceptable. 

Using eBooks

Your course allows open-book exams. You will only be allowed to use a hard copy of the textbook at the Testing Centers.

If the publisher offers an electronic version of the textbook (called an “eBook”), you will not be able to access it at the Testing Centers. Also, you will not be able to use the printouts of the electronic text or copies of the pages of the hard copy textbook at the Testing Centers. If you have purchased an eBook and wish to use a textbook during your open-book exam, we suggest that you check the NOVA libraries, and/or contact your instructor, to try to locate a hard copy you could borrow for the exam.

Exams

 

There are two (2) online proctored exams in this course that are password protected and must be taken at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk. If you can log on to Blackboard, but your course isn't listed, please contact ELI or your instructor.
