EDU 200: Introduction to Teaching as a Profession (3 Credits)

Overview

This course provides an orientation to the teaching profession in Virginia, including historical perspectives, current issues, and future trends in education on the national and state levels. You will explore information about teacher licensure examinations, steps to certification, teacher preparation and induction programs, and critical shortage areas in Virginia. You are expected to complete a supervised field placement (recommended 40 clock hours) in a K-12 school.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 24 credits of transfer courses.

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Examine state licensure/certification requirements for their fields of study.
  2. Assess strengths and weaknesses in preparation for state licensure examinations.
  3. Identify personal beliefs about teaching as a career through reflective writing.
  4. Reflect upon their field experiences through reflective writing and classroom discussions.
  5. Relate principles, theories, and history of education in the United States to actual practice in the classroom.
  6. Increase understanding of the field of education by focusing on the inter-relationship of teaching, learning, students, schools, and society.
  7. Present topics related to practice in a variety of communities, with students of differing ages and with culturally diverse and exceptional populations.
  8. Think critically and engage in problem solving related to the teaching profession as demonstrated in a student-constructed portfolio.

Exams

 

There are two (2) online proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the campus testing centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk. If you can log on to Blackboard, but your course isn't listed, please contact ELI or your instructor.
