ENG 003 : Allied Health track - 5 Credits
Professor:  Julie Peluso

Overview

This course is designed so that you will be writing independently and submitting work to an online forum. It may be awkward at first to present work on Blackboard that will be critiqued by others, but this practice will enable you to become more comfortable with your thoughts, your organizational schemes, and your ability to adequately defend a stance in writing.

All writing is an argument. You will try to persuade this class (your audience) of a point, whether it is in a personal narrative or in an actual political debate. I would like to see strong grammatical mastery (ability to correctly use grammar and syntax), use of logical evidence (point-by-point facts that “defend” your stand), and organizational ability (a strong hypothesis or opening statement, logical pathways through the evidence, and a conclusion that successfully sums up your paper, the “gist”) within each paper. With those three skills you will become a very hardy writer.

Prerequisite : Successful completion of ENG 001 or placement into ENG 003 from Compass test scores.

Students taking this course have designated a potential career paths for allied health , students, you are preparing for nursing, physician assistancy, physical and respiratory therapy, and other medical degrees. This course asks these allied health students to explore topics in medicine and to write about them.

Paper 1 Supplemental reading/writing assignments (2) = 15 points each (30 points)

Final paper submission (1) = 25 points

Total = 100 points (for the plan paper and argumentative paper, double the worth of each point value)

Note: each paper’s grade includes all draft work. This class will focus on process and product, so all work leading up to a final submission is considered part of the project. The breakdown by points for each part of each project will be listed on the schedule.

Submissions:

A student can submit a work only once. This makes drafts and process very important, but each piece adds points to the whole, so that while the final is worth the most points, the rest of the work is also valuable and helpful a student’s final points tally.
