FRE 102: Beginning French I (4 Credits)

Overview

Introduces understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills and emphasizes basic French sentence structure.

Beginning French, a basic introductory course, places emphasis on the development of proficiency in the follow ing skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students learn to function in the language w ithin a limited context of vocabulary and structure. The course also includes a general introduction to culture.

The following are required for entry into this course:

  • ...No prior experience in French needed
  • ...Textbook: Le Francais Interactif (Center for Open Educational Resources for Language Learning, COERLL available online)

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Communicate and survive in a French-speaking environment.
  2. Understand short conversations and responses to your questions.
  3. Participate in simple conversations, such as talking about yourself and your family, asking for directions, finding places, buying things.
  4. Read ads and simple forms.
  5. Write autobiographical information, and fill out simple forms and documents, make lists.

Your course grade will be determined by how many points you earn on the following components according to the following point values.

Your final grade will be based on the following scale. Please note that you must take all three exams and you also must pass at least 2 of the 3 exams in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.
