HIS 262: United States History in Film (3 Credits)
Overview

This course examines the US history as presented in the films from colonial times to the present.

Each week, students are usually expected to complete readings, an internet activity and watch two movies embedded in BlackBoard

There are no prerequisites for this course. It is preferable but not mandatory that the student has taken a general course in American history before enrolling in History 127. Students should also have reading and writing skills appropriate for college sophomore. This class will be conducted as an upper level course.

Objectives
 

 

In this course, you will learn to:

  1. Identify and discuss the major political and social events that occurred in American History during the following Historical periods: Early America, New Republic, Civil War, Late 19th century, Early 20th Century, World War II, Civil Rights, 1960s, and Post-Cold War.
  2. Evaluate and interpret historical documents and primary sources.
  3. Interpret films as texts that can help reveal the nature of historical characters and events.
  4. Explain how movies reveal the social, political, and cultural concerns of the time in which they were made.
  5. Evaluate films as complex cultural documents that reflect the concerns of the era in which they were made.
  6. Write an effective historical essay.

You will learn by :

  1. Weekly assignments, discussion boards, blogs, journals, course documents, quizzes and a contact section.

Your course grade will be determined by your performance on the following exams, assignments and papers, according to the following percentages.
