ITN 260 - Network Security Basics- 3 Credits

Overview

Provides an in-depth exploration of the basics of network security. Explores network security basics to include security objectives, security architecture, security models and security layers. Discusses risk management, network security policy, and security training. This course will also discuss the five security keys: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Accountability and Auditability.

Prerequisite: ITE 100 - Introduction to Information Systems

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Define key network security terminology
  • Explain the risk management process
  • Understand key disaster prevention and recovery concepts
  • Understand principles of key defensive tools such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems
  • Understand security network models such as virtual private networks

These specific policies will apply to this class

  • Administrative Withdrawal - I will administratively withdraw any student(s) on the 6th week if the following assignments have not been submitted:
    • Introduction - posted on Discussion Board
    • SANS - posted on Discussion Board
  • Extensions will not be granted automatically. To be granted extensions all of these conditions must be met:
    1. The student will request extension in writing
    2. The student has completed 50% of the course work. 50% is defined as:
    • student has completed two exams.
    • student has completed Introduction, SANS.
    • student has submitted Chapter 2: Phishing; Chapter 5: Honeypots.

  • The instructor will respond in writing to the student's request. The response will specify the period of extension. Only one extension per student will granted

    Exams

     

    There are 3 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

    Beginning the Course

     

    1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
    2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
    3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
    4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

    Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk. If you can log on to Blackboard, but your course isn't listed, please contact ELI or your instructor.
