Unit 1

Begin the course by sending your email address to the Instructor. Include your name and the course you are in, so that I can send you your grades.  I read my email almost every day and will respond promptly.

If you do not already have an email account, go to Email Instructions to learn how to open and use your NVCC student email account.

Please read the entire Course Guide before starting to work on Unit 1.

In this Unit you will:

  • Write a personal essay about yourself
  • Learn about problem solving, audience, and memo writing; write a memo report
  • Learn about organizing information for a reader; prepare a compare/contrast memo, including a simple table
  • Learn the importance of layout, and visuals in technical writing; prepare a simple graph or table

Unit 1 Assignments:

Reading 10th edition Lannon, Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 14 and 17
11th edition Lannon, Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4,12, 14 and 16
Exercises 1-4

Please do not submit work out of sequence. You must wait for my response to one piece of work before submitting the next. This allows you to profit from my feedback. There are NO exceptions.

You may want to print out this page before going on, so that you will have the instructions in front of you as you work through the tasks. However, the print-out will NOT include the hotlinks to other instructions, so you need to always refer back to this web page to access the hotlinks.

Note that exercises have possible points, which are indicated after each one; however, reading assignments do not have any points.

You must satisfactorily complete all of Units 1 and 2 by your Last Withdrawal date in order to remain in the course.

I will under NO CIRCUMSTANCES grade more than one piece of work in a single day, so you must plan accordingly.
