ADJ 105 - The Juvenile Justice System (3 Credits)
Overview

This course presents the evolution, philosophy, structures and processes of the American juvenile justice and delinquency systems.  The course surveys the right of juveniles, dispositional alternatives, rehabilitation methods, and current trends in the juvenile justice system.  This class will provide you with an overview of the juvenile offender, the types of violations committed by them, reasons for their misbehavior, and how our juvenile legal system works to rehabilitate the offender.

  • Prerequisites :Although there are no prerequisites for entry into this course, it is highly recommended that you be enrolled in the Administration of Justice program.  This course is also useful if you are a Sociology major.

    If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

    1. Describe the nature and extent of juvenile delinquency in the United States
    2. Define and explain the functioning of the juvenile justice system
    3. Explain the causes of youth crime and the role of external factors contributing to delinquency
    4. Recognize the importance of rehabilitation of juvenile offenders and prevention efforts
