ADJ 140 : Introduction to Corrections (3 Credits)
Overview

This course provides a general introduction to American corrections, including theories of punishment, social systems within correctional institutions, correctional history, contemporary prison issues and community corrections. It focuses on societal responses to the offender and traces the evolution of practices based on philosophies of retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation.

Course Prerequisites - Although there are no class prerequisites for this course, it is highly recommended that you be enrolled in the Administration of Justice program. This course is also useful if you are a Sociology major. You also need to have access to a computer and the internet.

Objectives
 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify various methods of reading instruction currently employed in the classroom.
  2. Identify several methods of assessing readers’ needs and determining instructional levels.
  3. Demonstrate and understanding of developmental reading levels and the various processes of remediating reading weaknesses.
  4. Understand the role of differentiated instruction for reading skills.
  5. Understand the methods of improving student comprehension skills on the primary and secondary levels.
  6. Communicate research based information regarding current reading instruction topics to the group.
  7. Read and critique current research on reading instructional methodologies.
  8. Compile an individual portfolio documenting observations, lesson plans and assessment strategies.
