ARA 102: Beginning Arabic II (5 Credits)
Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Continues to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills introduced in ARA 101. Treats basic Arabic sentence structure in greater detail. Expands study of the diversity of cultures in the Arab world. Lecture - 5 hours per week

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course is designed to introduce students to beginning communications skills in Arabic and to the varied cultures of the Arab world. It is intended to be useful to students of Arab descent as well as to meet the foreign language requirement of any degree.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Students must be functionally fluent in English. ARA 101 or its equivalent is a prerequisite for ARA 102.

Objectives
 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand simple spoken Arabic within the limited context of a student with one semester of Arabic study.
  2. Speak simple Arabic with correct pronunciation at normal conversational speed.
  3. Read the Arabic s/he has already learned to comprehend and speak, reading selections in rearrangements and combinations of words and expressions already encountered.
  4. Write accurately what the student has learned to understand, say, and read.
  5. Speak and read about different Arab cultures on a basic proficiency level.

In addition to the textbook, students will also need a microphone headset and a web camera to record the oral and video work.
