ART 105: Art in World Culture - 3 Credits
Professor: Kimberly Southern

Overview

This course is based on the television program "Art of the Western World", a nine-part series which focuses primarily on European art, from Ancient Greece to the Modern period as it relates to civilization and culture.  In the TV programs, your host, Michael Wood, and various art historians with special expertise in each area, take you to major monuments and museums to view and analyze the art works.  In addition to stylistic characteristics, iconography and major artists and movements, the programs explore historical, religious, and social factors that contributed to artistic expression in the Western world.  The television series and course use the "paradigm" method in which a few selected art works serve as key examples to illustrate the major developments and periods.  You are encouraged to take advantage of our proximity to the outstanding museums in the Washington, D.C. area, which have many works by the artists discussed in the programs.

The homework questions ask you to consider some of the ideas discussed in the programs and to express your own interpretation or summary of those ideas and help prepare you for the tests.
