AST 253 - Desktop Publishing I - 3 Credits

Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to specific desktop publishing software. You will learn document layout and design, fonts, type styles, style sheets and graphics. This is a hands-on internet course, which may be repeated to learn different desktop publishing software. It is designed to familiarize students with the features of a desktop publishing software package and enable them to design and develop publications on a microcomputer.  You will choose from Photoshop CS or InDesign CS.

  If you complete this course and do well, you will be able:
To define desktop publishing.
  • To create text.
  • To know the features of a desktop publishing software package.
  • To create, format, edit, and print layouts.
  • To import and place text and graphics.
  • To print and save documents.
  • To use fonts, type styles and graphics to enhance publications.
Prerequisites
The following are required for entry into this course:
  • an understanding of basic computer terminology
  • basic word processing knowledge
  • ability to work in a Windows environment

Grading Scale

InDesign Final Grades will be based on the following scale: 
A = 549-610 points 
B = 487-548 points
C = 425-486 points 
D = 363-424 points 
F = Fewer than 363 points

Photoshop Final Grades will be based on the following scale:
A = 752-835 points
B = 670-753 points
C = 585-669 points
D = 502-585 points
F = Less than 502 points

Exams
  You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. Testing Centers will NOT let you take an exam if you bring your children.  This is an issue of liability.

At all Testing Centers, you will be required to show photo identification to take your examination. This may be an official driver's license, a DMV ID, or a military ID. You will also be required to provide the appropriate Exam Pass found on your course web site or in the Syllabus, and your NovaConnect ID (also called your Student Number and EmplID). To look up your NovaConnect ID before you go to the testing center, go to http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect/. 

If you have received a W grade, you must have written permission from your instructor to take exams. Be sure to take this permission with you to the Testing Center to take the exam.

Beginning the Course
 
1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords. 
2. Log on to your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email. 
3. Log on to your Blackboard account. 
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
