BUS 165: Small Business Management (3 Credits)

Overview

This course is an 8-week online course, which is part of the Business Management Principles Certificate. This course follows a robust weekly schedule with deadlines in which students must complete and/or submit specific assignments.

This course identifies management concerns unique to small businesses; introduces the requirements necessary to initiate a small business; identifies the elements comprising a business plan, and presents information establishing financial and administrative controls, developing a marketing strategy, managing business operations, and the legal and government relationships specific to small businesses.

Entry Level Competencies:There are no prerequisites for taking BUS 165. However, you should have the ability to read, comprehend, analyze material written at a college level and write and present ideas using standard English. Iit is also highly recommended that you have completed ENG 111, English Composition I and posses basic computer skills to do well in this course.

  • Analyze the characteristics and skills of a business enterpriser.
  • Understand how to start a business or buy an existing concern or franchise.
  • Identify the fundamental government regulations applicable to small business.
  • Define the basic management functions of a small business.
  • Analyze the marketing concept and challenges of small businesses.
  • Identify the components and processes of logistical and supply chain systems.
  • Identify the different types of resources available to small businesses to create and grow their businesses.
  • Analyze the basic financial reports to monitor the financial performance and risks of a small business.
  • Develop selected portions of a small business web site.
  • Write selected sections of a business plan.
