Overview

This course uses a unique approach to the study of Management: The Competing Values Analysis. This approach analyzes the basic roles that all successful managers need, while recognizing that no manager is the master of all managerial roles. It is the intent of this course to let you self examine your managerial personality to first establish your strengths and weaknesses. By the end of the course you should know the areas that are in need of improvement.

In this course, you will learn about management issues and techniques that are used by managers as they go about facing the challenges of Management. The course builds upon the foundation that was built in Bus 200-Principles of Management. More important, the exercises and assessments used in this course will tell you much about yourself as this applies to the attributes needed to be a successful manager. Upon completion of this course, you will be prepared to apply your knowledge of the following topics in a practical way within the management environment:

  • Organizing and job design.
  • Authority and power.
  • Individual and group behavior.
  • Motivation and leadership.

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the definition and purposes of management
  • Understand the basic management functions and roles, and skills needed to fulfill them
  • Explain the history of management and be aware of the major management theories
  • Become acquainted with the environments in which managers operate
  • Have learned the purpose and importance of planning, the types of plans, and the planning process
  • Have learned the decision-making process and the role of groups in decision-making
  • Become acquainted with some quantitative decision-making tools
  • Understand the fundamentals of organizing
  • Be able to apply the concepts of organization by using certain structures and understand why organizations use certain structures.
  • Become familiar with the concept of change and be able to explain its importance in coping with dynamic environments
  • Understand and explain the strategic role of human resources management
  • Discuss the nature of work force diversity in the U.S. and its implications
  • Know how effective communications contribute to management
  • Be able to identify and understand the theories of motivation
  • Relate the meaning and role of leadership

  • Management: Meeting & Exceeding Customer Expectations , 9th Ed., by Plunkett, W.R., R.F. Attner, and G.S. Allen. Publisher: Thomson South-Western. Refer to the current syllabus in case a new edition of this text has been adopted.

Exams

 

There are 4 online proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
