CHM 111: COLLEGE CHEMISTRY I (4 CREDITS)

Overview

CHM 111 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors.  It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry.

Prerequisites for CHM 111 are satisfactory placement scores for ENG 111 and MTH 163 (or completion of units 0-9 of MTT course). Satisfactory completion of a high school chemistry course or its equivalent is strongly recommended.

In order to succeed in this online course, you also must be comfortable working with technology. At a minimum, you must possess the following technical skills:

  • Ability to use the Internet in an effective and efficient manner, including installation and management of browser plug-ins and add-ons.
  • Basic knowledge about the operation of a computer, file management, and software installation.
  • Working knowledge of the Blackboard learning management system.

CHM 111 requires attendance at six (6) campus lab sessions to complete twelve (12) in-person labs. Dates, times, and locations are published in the NOVAConnect Student Information System for each CHM 111 section. There are no make-up lab dates.

Grading

Your course grade will be determined by the following:

Assignment
Points

Exams (7 exams, 100pts/exam) - - your lowest exam grade from exams 2 through 6 will be dropped

600
Mandatory Quizzes to be Submitted for Grade
(11 Quizzes, 10 pts/Quiz)
110
Mandatory Laboratory Assignments
290

Grading Scale
A
90-100 percent
B
80-89 percent
C
70-79 percent
D
60-69 percent
F
Less than 60 percent

To pass CHM 111 (grade of D or higher), the exam average, the quiz average and the lab grade average must each be equal to or greater than 60%. The mandatory on-campus labs must be completed in order to pass the course.
