CHM 111: COLLEGE CHEMISTRY I - 4 CREDITS
Instructor: Reva A. Savkar

Overview

Reva

CHM 111 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors.  It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry.  Prerequisites for CHM 111 include satisfactory placement scores for ENG 111 and MTH 166 or higher level mathematics course.

Entry Level Competencies:   Satisfactory completion of a high school chemistry course or its equivalent is strongly recommended.    Since this course is taught in part over the World Wide Web, you should also be familiar with how to use a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and electronic mail.

You must take the Lab Safety Assignment at home and the Lab Safety Quiz in any NOVA Testing Center by 1/20/09, and take Exam 1 by 1/30/09

Your mandatory on-campus labs on the Annandale campus (CS 230) are as follows:

9/19, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon (Expt 2);
10/31, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon (Expt 12);
11/21, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (DryLab 3)

There are no make-up lab dates

Objectives

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites are satisfactory placement scores for ENG 111 and MTH 163.

This is not an introductory chemistry course, and has been designed for science majors.  It requires a strong background in mathematics. I strongly recommend that you should have completed High School Chemistry and College Algebra, MTH 163, before taking this course

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. apply the principles of scientific method and measurement;
  2. describe atomic structure emphasizing the electron configuration of atoms and chemical periodicity;
  3. name and write formulas for chemical compounds
  4. perform calculations involving stoichiometry, thermochemistry, unit conversions, molarity, density, composition, gas laws;
  5. determine the type of bonding, molecular structure and polarity of given compounds or molecules;
  6. use the principles of molecular bonding to explain or predict the properties of substances;
  7. complete and balance simple equations.
