CHM 112 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors.  It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry.  Prerequisites for CHM 112 is satisfactory completion of CHM 111(or its equivalent). You need to review all the CHM 111 topics, concepts and skills, which serve as the foundation for all CHM 112 material.

Entry Level Competencies:   Since this course is taught in part over the World Wide Web, you should also be familiar with how to use a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and electronic mail.

This is an accelerated 8-week course.  It is very important that you maintain the weekly assignment schedule in order to successfully learn the material and complete the course objectives.  This is a robust course; you should spend at least 20-hours per week completing the readings, homework, lab assignments, and quizzes and exams.  The course contains  a Lab Safety Quiz, a Nomenclature Test, 7 exams (to be taken in the NOVA Testing Center), and 3 mandatory On-Campus Labs.

You must take the Lab Safety Quiz by 5/22/09 in any NOVA Testing Center, take the Nomenclature Test by 6/10/09 and take Exam 1 by 5/29/09.

The mandatory on-campus labs on the Annandale campus (CS 230) are as follows:

Saturday, 5/30, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Expt 35);
Saturday, 6/13, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Expt 21);
Saturday, 6/27, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Expt. 30)

There are no make-up lab dates.

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

1. Do calculations involving: various concentration units, colligative properties, equilibrium, reaction rates, aqueous equilibria, free energy, Gibbs' equation, Nernst equation, cell potentials, mass-energy conversions.  
2. Predict the effect of various stresses on equilibrium systems.  
3. Write and balance equations for: net ionic reactions, neutralization reactions, precipitation reactions, oxidation-reduction reactions, nuclear reactions.  
4. Recognize the properties of acids and bases.  
5. Recognize the properties and uses of radioactive isotopes.

2. Laboratory Manual for "Principles of General Chemistry", 6th Edition, Wiley Custom Publishing

Your course grade will be determined by the following:

To pass CHM 112 (grade of D or higher), the exam average, the assignment average and the lab grade average must each be equal to or greater than 60%.  

You must take the exams as per the schedule in the Overview of Assignments, at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass.
