Overview

In this course, you will learn the basics of communication and relationships..

You will learn by participating in discussion boards, observing communication context, reading, writing and even creating you own communication circumstance.

What you learn in this course will benefit you by making the most out of your communication interactions and being able to understand the communication patterns of others.

Upon successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

Grading
 

Your course grade will be determined by the following:

Participation: 25 points
This includes: submission of assignments, involvement in class discussion boards, and participation in class activities.

Journals: 75 points
You will be assigned 3 journal topics that will require you to answer questions about information you have read and provide examples from your own life.

Exam: 200 points
Two objective exams, 100 points each, covering information presented in the text and class lectures. See www.abacon.com/seiler for chapter review. Students will complete the test at an NVCC testing center on a local campus.

Communication Concepts Film Paper: 100 points
This assignment will involve watching a movie (approved by the professor) and writing a 5-7 page paper identifying communication concepts that the movie illustrates.

Group Project: 200 points
A 15-20 minute small group presentation demonstrating how to use communication concepts to effect social change.

Conflict Journal:  50 points:  In this assignment the student will keep a journal of the conflict situations that they observe and they will connect their observation with readings in the text and instruuctor lecture.


Informative Speech: 100 points
A 4-6 minute extemporaneous speech on an informative topic selected by the students and approved by the instructor.
 

Your final grade will be based on the following scale:

A 700-800
B 600-699
C 500-599
D 400-499
F 0-399


Please Note: If you do not submit [at least one assignment] by your Last Withdrawal Date, you will be automatically withdrawn from the course with no refund. If you do not withdraw and do not finish your course assignments, you will receive a grade based upon the work you have submitted. Usually, this grade is an “F.”

If you are past your Last Withdrawal Date but have mitigating circumstances that prevent you from finishing the course, contact your instructor in writing to request a "W" grade.

If you are making progress in your course, but your End of Enrollment date is near and extenuating circumstances prevent you from completing all of the course assignments, you may request a grade of Incomplete. To request a grade of Incomplete for this course, you must have satisfactorily completed [approximately 50% of all assignments and examinations, as specified by the instructor.] or [enter specific assignments and examinations here.]

If you are receiving financial aid, course withdrawal or a grade of “F” may impact your status. Please contact the Financial Aid office for further information.

Exams

 

There are 2 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
