ENG 123: Writing for the World Wide Web - 3 Credits

Overview

This course teaches students how to outline, compose, organize, and edit written materials for publication on the World Wide Web. Students will learn how to design basic web pages, compose web site content, design web site layout and develop web site navigation for a variety of possible audiences.

Objectives

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • evaluate web sites for proper utilization of conventional design elements;
  • use HTML to code web page elements;
  • create and publish a multi-section web site that follows the conventions of good web design;
  • understand the differences between writing in linear manuscript form and writing for the World Wide Web;
  • write and publish at least one lengthy (three or more monitor screens) informative document designed specifically to be read on the World Wide Web; and
  • document the content and organizational structure of your web site.

The required textbook for this course is:

  • Castro, HTML, XHTML & CSS, 6th edition
  • Lynch and Horton, Web Style Guide, 2nd edition (This text is also available free online at Web Style Guide; reading assignments are linked to the text web site.)
  • Williams and Tollett, The Non-Designer's Web Book, 3rd edition

Additional Materials:

You will be required to post most of your class assignments on line.  Therefore, you must have access to a computer and the ability to access and use the following materials:

  • A simple text editor such as Notepad (available with Windows operating systems)
  • The World Wide Web through an on-campus connection or your own Internet Service Provider
  • Your VCCS email account
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (v. 6.x or higher)--available for free download
  • Firefox browser--available for free download
  • Ws_ftp--available for free download
  • WinZip--available for free download

Exams

There are 3 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk. If you can log on to Blackboard, but your course isn't listed, please contact ELI or your instructor.
