ENG 243: Survey of English Literature I - 3 Credits

Overview

The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with major works and significant developments of English Literature from the Anglo Saxon period through the 18th Century.  Five literary periods are involved:  Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Middle English, Renaissance, Restoration, and 18th Century.  For purposes of this course, each period will be approached in terms of the relationships between major works and changing cultural background.  Your course work will involve both critical reading and critical writing.

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify general cultural developments for the periods involved.
  • Identify general literary developments for the periods involved.
  • Identify example literary works for these periods.
  • Relate example literary works to general cultural and literary developments of these periods.

Materials

 

The required textbooks for this course are:

  • Greenblatt, Stephen, et al. The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Major Authors. 8th ed. New York: W.W. Norton and Co., 2001. [Note that this is a one-volume edition which is also required for ENG 244. Make sure you get the major authors edition.]
  • Chaucer, Geoffrey. The Canterbury Tales. Translated by Nevil Coghill. New York: Penguin, 1951.

Exams

 

There are 3 proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://nvcc.my.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
