Survey of Asian American Literature - 3 CREDITS

Overview

 

In this course, you will learn Asian American writings that dramatize the historical experience of Asian immigrants and their succeeding generations on the North American continent. You will learn by reading short stories, poems, plays and biographical excerpts, watching films and studying relevant theories. What you learn in this course will benefit you by helping you tranfer to other universities, fulfill the literature course requirement for the Liberal Arts Degree and, most importantly, develop your critical thinking skills and interest in global education.

Objectives

 

If you complete this course and do well, you will be able

         * To understand and enjoy Asian American literary works

         * To appreciate the literary works in relationship to the cultures that        

             produced  them and to evaluate their relevance and importance for current society

         * To read literary texts for meaning, structure and style

         * To develop critical reading, writing and thinking skills through the analysis of  

             literary works

Your course grade will be determined by the following:

13 Weekly Comments (4% each) 52%
2 Analytical Essays (10% each) 20%
2 Discussion Board Postings (4% each) 8%
Exam 1 10%
Exam 2 10%

Your final grade will be based on the following scale. Please note that you must take both exams as well as pass at least one of them in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.

Exams

 

There are 2 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
