FST 245: Fire and Risk Analysis (3 Credits)
Overview

This course presents a study of current urban fire problems with emphasis on solutions based upon current available technology. Includes master planning, as well as methods of identifying, analyzing and measuring accompanying risk and loss possibilities.

Entry Level Competencies: Although there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is an advanced Fire Science course and it is recommended that it be taken in the last semester prior to graduating so that you will have appropriate background information to draw from when completing the assignments.  Fire service experience will also serve this purpose

Objectives
 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Define how the concepts of risk management affect strategies and tactical decision making.
    · Describe and evaluate circumstances that might constitute an unsafe act.
    · Explain the concept of empowering all emergency services personnel to stop unsafe acts.
    · Explain the importance of investigating all near misses, injuries, and fatalities.
    · Validate the need for national training standards as they correlate to professional development inclusive qualifications, certifications, and recertifications.
    · Explain the need for enhancement of personal and organizational accountability for health and safety.
    · Define and describe the need for cultural and behavioral change within the emergency services relating to safety, incorporating leadership, supervision, accountability, and personal responsibility.
    · Formulate an awareness of how adopting standardized policies for responding to emergency scenes can minimize near misses, injuries, and deaths.
