Overview

In this course, you will learn the legal requirements associated with health record documentation and the polices and procedures concerning release of medical information and confidentiality of records.

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast various types of health records (e.g., ambulatory, long-term care, substance abuse, correctional facilities) and reimbursement methods used.
  2. Compare and contrast various types of health record documentation requirements issues specific to various types of facilities (e.g., ambulatory, long term, substance abuse etc.)
  3. Describe important changes that have affected health care delivery in the United States and expanded the role of health information managers.
  4. Discuss key events that have shaped 20th-century health care and categorize these events by societal expectation, patient care, payment issues, and technology.
  5. Outline the impact that health care changes have had on health information and organize them by societal expectation, patient care,
    payment issues, and technology.
  6. Explain how the shift from inpatient to outpatient care has expanded opportunities for those working with health care information.
  7. Appraise the federal government's impact on health care delivery and health care information.
  8. Examine the role that the cost of health care has had in shaping health care delivery and the uses of health care information.
  9. Explain why the structure of the managed care organization affects the way health care documentation is managed.
  10. Recognize the characteristics of those who receive care and those who provide care in a managed care organization (MCO), freestanding, hospital-based, ESRD and other type facilities.
  11. Distinguish and analyze the role of HIM among the various specialized
    functions of health information management in managed care, hospitalbased ambulatory, substance abuse, mental health etc.
  12. Compare and contrast integrated delivery systems/networks with MCOs.
  13. Describe the many types of ambulatory care settings available in the hospital.
  14. Explain the regulatory, licensure, and accreditation requirements in the freestanding ambulatory, hospital-based ambulatory, dialysis care and other healthcare setting.
  15. Demonstrate an understanding of the phenomenon of dual diagnoses as part of the overlap between mental health and substance abuse programs.
  16. Comprehend the stringent regulatory and accreditation environment experienced in the long-term care setting.
  17. Describe the wide range of living arrangements and client types within the ICF/MR setting.
  18. Comprehend the nature and implications of palliative care, realizing the relationships between patients and caregivers.
  19. Apply previously learned knowledge about patient documentation and records management to distinguish what is unique to the hospice care setting.
  20. Apply previous learning about patient documentation and records management to distinguish what is unique to the dental setting.
  21. Comprehend the unique circumstances of the incarcerated patient, regulatory and accrediting agencies in this unique to correctional setting.
  22. Apply previous learning about patients and caregivers to distinguish what is unique to the veterinary setting.
  23. Apply previous learning about regulatory and accrediting agencies to distinguish what is unique to the veterinary setting.
  24. Apply previous learning about patient documentation and records management to distinguish what is unique to the veterinary setting.
