HIM 226: Legal Aspects of Health Record Documentation
Overview

HIM 226 is designed to help you learn the legal requirements associated with health record documentation and the policies and procedures concerning release of medical information.

Prerequisites  

  • Enrollment in the Health Information Management (HIM) Program 
  • Completion of HIM 141 or permission of the instructor.

Objectives
 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Acquire knowledge of the regulations, standards and policies governing record retention;
  2. Develop an awareness of the importance of the health record as a legal document;
  3. Appreciate the confidential nature of primary and secondary health records;
  4. Understand major issues in federal, state and local laws, regulations and standards;
  5. Appreciate the importance of ethical standards in the delivery of health care;
  6. Develop skill in releasing confidential information to responsible parties; and
  7. Demonstrate competence in developing/revising policies and procedures for the release of information.
