This course examines the roles of women and the attitudes toward women in American Society from colonial times to the present.

In this course, you will learn:

  1. how American women's roles and status have evolved over time.
  2. how key historical events and changes in American Society have impacted women and our ideas about women.
  3. about the interactions between women across race and class lines and the interrelationships between constructions of gender, race, class, and sexuality.
  4. how our past impacts on lives today.

You will learn by :

  1. Exploring historical questions through web quests and internet activities.
  2. Studying and interpreting historical documents.
  3. Participating in historical role-playing exercises.
  4. Taking an Oral History of a contemporary American woman.
  5. Visiting and exploring virtual Museum Exhibits on the Internet.
  6. Reading articles by some of the best historians in the field.
  7. Sharing your ideas and comments with the Professor and other students in the class.

What you learn in this course will benefit you by:

  1. Developing skills in historical research.
  2. Developing skills in interpreting the past and applying the lessons learned to contemporary problems.
  3. Understanding the sacrifices made by those in past and how they have shaped the life you lead today.
