HUM 201: Survey of Western Culture I - 3 Credits

Overview

In this course, you will learn about the eras of the humanistic tradition, as defined in the class schedule; The locations and significance of the great centers of the humanistic tradition; and the key forms and ideas in the arts, music, philosophy and literature of each era. You will learn to recognize and interpret major individual works, and to draw correlations between art forms, eras and civilizations.

You will learn by reading, writing, discussing ideas with me and your classmates asynchronously and synchronously, visiting a museum, and taking tests.  This learning process will rquire a substantive and regular commitment of time, commeasurate with an academic college course at the second year level.  Please make sure to reserve several hours of study and work time each week to assure that you will complete the course successfully. 

What you learn in this course will benefit you by broading your factual knowledge, but more importantly by allowing you to see great human achievements is their fuller perspectives, and to understand yourself and your humanity more fully.

Exams

 

There are 3 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect Empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard and email at http://nvcc.my.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
