Overview

In this course, we will be working to familiarize you with library resources and the research process. The goal is for you to become more comfortable with the research process, and to transfer these skills to the other courses that my take while at NOVA.

This course is 8 weeks in length, and has set due dates. Please check in on Blackboard regularly, to make sure that you are staying up-to-date.

If you complete this course and do well, you will be able to:

  • Select and develop a well-defined research topic.
  • Identify and describe types of information sources.
  • Determine the appropriate tool for finding needed information and resources.
  • Create and refine search strategies using a variety of sources.
  • Document sources in an appropriate citation style.
  • Evaluate the quality of different information sources for academic purposes.
  • Identify and discuss the ethical and legal issues surrounding information.

Exams

 

There are two (2) online exams in this course. Your exams will be conducted online in our Collaborate Classroom located in Blackboard under the Discussion Board. To participate, you will need: A webcam so that the instructor can verify your identity, a microphone/headset, photo identification.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
