MTH 200: Abstract Algebra - 3 Credits
Overview

This course is a first course in Abstract Algebra requirement. The content covers structures such as groups, rings, and fields. This course satisfies the abstract requirement for the 6-12 math teaching endorsement in Virginia.

This class requires online virtual class meetings, Monday and Wednesday, 4:30-5:50 pm. It also requires completing assignments on a fixed weekly schedule, with some mid-week deadlines, and online collaboration in group assignments. You will need high speed internet access with speakers & a microphone or headset.

Objectives

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the basic terms of abstract algebra:  group, subgroup, isomorphism, normal subgroup, homomorphism, ring, integral domain, and field.
  • Determine whether a given structure is a group, a field, or a ring, as appropriate.
  • Given two groups, determine if they are isomorphic, homomorphic, or if one is a subgroup of the other.
  • Illustrate group behaviors using finite groups, cyclic groups, and permutation groups.
  • Illustrate ring, field, or integral domain behaviors using appropriate models.
