MTH 242: Statistics II - 3 credits

Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the necessary abilities in inferential statistics to understand the results of statistical studies and to perform inferential statistical studies within their areas of interest. The course concepts would be beneficial for the student with an interest in statistics. Emphasis will be placed upon the use of the computer and/or the graphing calculator to perform statistical computations

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of MTH241 or equivalent

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • compare and contrast z-tests, X2-tests, and F-tests for testing hypotheses
  • use the F-test to determine homogeneity of treatments .
  • use software or calculator to compute and graph linear regression equations
  • use software of calculator to compute and interpret the Pearson correlation coefficient
  • formulate and test hypotheses concerning correlations .
  • state the assumptions in the ANOVA models
  • perform an analysis of variance for the completely randomized design
  • perform an analysis of variance for the randomized block design
  • use nonparametric methods for testing hypotheses
  • design a model for an experimental investigation
  • conduct a survey, analyze the data, and draw appropriate conclusions
  • use software to calculate z-scores, t-scores, X2 -scores, and F-scores

Exams

 

There are two proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Inactive Students Dropped: Inactive students who have not completed at least one quiz within five weeks of enrollment date will be administratively withdrawn without tuition refund. You will receive a grade of W.

Last Date for Withdrawal: This is the last date on which you can withdraw from this course without grade penalty. Use the NovaConnect online or telephone registration system to drop the course, or send a written request to ELI Registration so that it is received by this date. You will also be administratively withdrawn and you will receive a grade of W if you do not complete at least 4 quizzes by this date.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
