This course is primarily for the student in mathematics, engineering, the sciences and other areas requiring strong mathematical backgrounds. The purpose is to give the student a basic understanding of the techniques for solving ordinary differential equations.

Prerequisite:

• MTH 173 - Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
• MTH 174 - Calculus with Analytic Geometry II

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

• Display a working knowledge of the terminology of differential equations
• Solve first order differential equations using standard techniques
• Solve homogeneous and non-homogeneous linear differential equations with constant coefficients
• Solve systems of linear differential equations using eigenvalues
• Solve applied problems such as growth and decay, oscillatory motion, and electric circuits

In addition to the text book & software information found on the ELI bookstore site, you will also use a number of free, online resources. More information about these sites will be available in the Blackboard course site.

Possible Assignments Include: (Subject to change each semester. The actual assignments are available in the Syllabus in the Blackboard course site on the first day of classes.)

Your final grade may be based on the following scale. Please note that you must also pass the comprehensive final exam in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.

There are three exams in this course. The exams are on paper and must be taken at a campus testing center.
