NUR 111: NURSING PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS I

Overview


This course in the nursing sequence prepares students to utilize the nursing process to meet patients’ needs for preventive health maintenance, health promotion, and teaching and learning throughout the life span by providing nursing care to assist clients and their families in acute and long term care settings.

This course requires weekly eNOVA virtual meetings on Mondays at 1 p.m.

Prerequisites: SDV elective, NAS 161, NAS 162, ENG 111.
Co-requisites: NUR 150, PSY 201, HLT 141.

  • Achieve the objectives that precede each assigned chapter.

  • Describe nursing program themes as they relate to each area of content.

  • Utilize Evolve web site (http://evolve.elsevier.com), course textbooks, and accompanying materials as it relates to each chapter.

Grading
 

The final course grade is calculated based on all tests, exams and assignments. To progress to the next semester, students must achieve a minimum grade of 78% (C). Students must pass all components of the course, including clinical laboratory and campus laboratory, in order to pass in order to pass the coure and progress in the nursing program.

Clinical Practice: Clinical practice is graded as Pass/Fail based on weekly student evaluations. All clinical rotations must be passed in order to pass NUR 111.  A minimum of 85% of clinical evaluation criteria must be completed with a grade of “S” (Satisfactory) in order to pass clinical.

Campus Lab: Campus lab is graded as Pass/Fail based on three skills tests that will be administered this semester.

Exams

 

There will be six tests in NUR 111, plus a comprehensive cumulative final exam.  Tests 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 will be online using Blackboard.  The midterm exam (test #3) and the final exam will be cumulative and will be completed at the Medical Education Campus.  All Blackboard tests will be scheduled at 1:00pm on Mondays; test dates can be found in the course syllabus.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
