NUR 150 : Community-Based Nursing in a Multicultural Environment

Overview

This course incorporates the community as a broad focus in order to understand the individuals, family, and community as the recipients of health care delivery in a multicultural society.  The environment for learning will vary by the format in which the course is offered but may include:  lecture, discussion, individual presentations, guest lecturers, reflection, audio-visual and Internet materials, and various critical thinking modalities.

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the factors that define a community
  • Identify the functions and purposes of community health programs.
  • Identify the purpose and goals of community-based nursing.
  • Discuss the growing diversity of the health care population.
  • Discuss strategies in providing culturally sensitive care to a diverse society.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills in a culturally competent way.
  • Assess patients/clients from diverse cultures.
  • Define the family in broad terms, various family forms, structures, functions, and developmental tasks of the family throughout the life span. components of family assessment, including the use of a family genogram.
  • Describe the role of the nurse in a comprehensive family assessment.
  • Evaluate the significant factors that lead to the identification of violence, abuse, and crisis in families.Assess communicable diseases prevalent in the U.S., using the epidemiological triad and primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions.
  • Identify the immunization needs of clients in the community across the life span.
  • Identify the threats of emerging diseases to the community.
  • Identify precautions and interventions for communities exposed to biological, chemical, radiological terrorism and other mass incidences.
  • Use the Nursing Code of Ethics as a framework for meeting the needs of clients in the community.
  • Describe the components of personal and nursing disaster planning.
  • Assess a community and examine the special or vulnerable populations with the community.

Exams

 

There are two online exam. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
