NUR 221: Second Level Nursing Principles and Concepts (9 Credits)
Overview

Principles and Concepts I focuses on nursing care of individuals, families, and/or groups with multidimensional needs in a variety of settings, and uses all components of the nursing process with increasing degrees of skill. The course includes math computational skills, basic computer instruction related to the delivery of nursing care, and nursing care related to infectious, immunological, oncological, hematological, gastrointestinal, sensory, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, regulatory, and endocrine care. The course provides supervised learning experiences in college nursing laboratories and/or cooperating agencies. .

Entry Level Competencies:
Pre-Requisites: NUR 111, NUR 150, NUR 180, NUR 201, HLT 141, HLT 250, PSY 201 & 202

Co-Requisites: SPD Elective, Humanities Elective, NUR 255

Objectives
 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, treatment and all components of the nursing process for clients with infectious, immunological, oncological, hematological, gastrointestinal, sensory, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, regulatory, and endocrine disorders.
  2. Utilize the nursing process as a framework for care of the clients with the conditions studied.
  3. Demonstrate culturally competent nursing care.
  4. Explore ethical and legal implications related to nursing care.
  5. Identify community measures in the prevention and management of specific communicable diseases.
  6. Utilize advanced communication skills.
  7. Demonstrate nursing skills appropriate to the level of practice expected of a third-semester nursing student.
  8. Demonstrate math skills related to nursing care.
  9. Demonstrate computer skills related to nursing care.
  10. Utilize critical thinking in managing client problems discussed this semester.
  11. Discuss the following concepts: safety, nutrition, pharmacology, communication, and roles of nurses as they relate to client problems studied this semester.
  12. Identify pharmacological and nutritional management for the conditions and diseases under study, and discuss related nursing implications.
  13. Relate cultural significance to incidence, risk management and outcomes for immunological, oncological, hematological, gastrointestinal, sensory, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, regulatory, and endocrine disorders.
  14. Discuss spiritual, ethical, psychosocial, and cultural issues related to specific alterations and treatment modalities.
  15. Discuss social and cultural considerations when assessing clients for risk of the condition under study.
