NUR 222: Second Level Nursing Principles and Concepts II (9 Credits)
Overview

Principles and Concepts II focuses on nursing care of individuals, families, and/or groups with multidimensional needs in a variety of settings, and uses all components of the nursing process with increasing degrees of skill. The course includes math computation skills, basic computer instruction related to the delivery of nursing care and nursing care related to cardiac, respiratory, neurological disorders, emergency care and leadership principles. The course provides supervised learning experiences in college nursing laboratories and/or cooperating agencies.

Entry Level Competencies:
Pre-Requisites: NUR 111, NUR 150, NUR 180, NUR 201, NUR 221, HLT 141, HLT 250, PSY 201 & 202

Co-Requisites: SPD Elective, Humanities Elective, NUR 254 or NUR 255

Objectives
 

Using knowledge from natural sciences, behavioral and social sciences, the humanities and advanced nursing theory and practice across the lifespan, the student will:

  1. Review anatomy and physiology as it relates to specific content.
  2. Meet objectives and competencies that precede each assigned chapter.

  3. Assess, diagnose, plan, and implement prioritized care to meet the bio-psychosocial and spiritual needs of clients based on Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs, and evaluate that care.
  4. Analyze the client’s status on the health-illness continuum from maximum health to death.
  5. Demonstrate increasing skill using the nursing process to provide nursing care of clients in various environments.
  6. Apply the three roles of the Associate Degree Nurse inherent within the outcome objectives of the nursing program:
    • Provider of care
    • Manager of client care
    • Member within the profession of nursing.
  7. Discuss etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, treatment and all components of the nursing process for clients with:
    • Respiratory conditions
    • Neurological disorders
    • Peripheral vascular and cardiovascular disorders
    • Chronic diseases of adults and children
    • Burns
    • Need for triage and emergency nursing care
  8. Explore the role of the nurse in rehabilitation and major trauma settings.
  9. Discuss social and cultural considerations when assessing clients for risk of the condition under study.
  10. Demonstrate the nursing skills appropriate to this level of practice.
  11. Demonstrate math and computer skills related to nursing care.
  12. Utilize critical thinking in managing problems discussed this semester.
  13. Explore ethical and legal implications related to nursing care.
