This course addresses management and organizational skills as they relate to nursing. It emphasizes group dynamics, resolution of conflicts, and leadership styles.
You will learn by reading your textbook, by sharing clinical experiences and discussing issues you may encounter in your career with others in the class, and by taking practice tests to help you prepare for the exams.
This course prepares you, an associate degree nurse, to understand the role of the nurse in the management of patient/client care in a wide variety of health care settings providing primary, secondary and tertiary care.

The prerequisite for this course is:
- All Level 1 Nursing Courses
If you do well in this course, you will be able to:
- Define and differentiate nursing management, nursing leadership, and client care management.
- Describe the use of various communication modalities to foster effective working relationships.
- Describe the value of, and techniques for, giving and receiving feedback about job performance.
- State principles for managing change and conflict.
- Identify the misson statements, philosophy, communication styles, and organizational structures that make up the organizational culture of a health care delivery institution.
- Describe procedures and issues related to client care management.
- Explain strategies for delegating.
- Describe principles for effective time management and task priortization.
- Discuss legal issues related to delegating care and client confidentiality.
- Identify common ethical issues for the nurse manager.
- Describe current health care trends in the United States.
- Discuss the political processes involved in influencing public health care policies.

- Essentials of Nursing Leadership and Management, Fourth Edition, by Tappan, Weiss, and Whitehead, F. A. Davis Company, 2007.
- You will need purchase access to the HESI Leadership Exam at the MEC bookstore. Keep the receipt! You will need to turn it in when you take the exam.

In order to successfully pass this course, you must:
- Take all exams, including the HESI exam. A missed exam will result in a score of zero (0) and result in the reduction of your final grade by one letter grade.
- Complete all assignments. Each week's assignments must be submitted by the end of the week in which they are assigned; late assignments will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero. For every two missed or late homework assignments, you will receive a grade of zero (0) for the assignment and your final grade will be reduced by one letter grade.

There are 3 course exams and an ATI test in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect Empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course |

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
