Overview

After exploring six personal areas of life that impact a career direction, the student will move into managing change and exploring career options. The course stresses career development and assists in the understanding of self in the word of work. Students will become aware of available career resources and how to conduct informational interviews. Finally, the student will become aware of creating quality and balance in their life choices.

Prerequisites/Expectations/Recommended Knowledge and Skills:

It is expected that you will spend 2-3 hours per week on assignments, not counting the project or study for the final exam. You are encouraged to work ahead if your schedule permits.

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • dentify major work values, skills and abilities, interests, personal values, self-esteem builders, and lifestyle considerations.
  • demonstrate the ability to use informational interviewing techniques in the career exploration process.
  • describe career-planning resources from the college, community and Internet.
  • formulate goals for decision-making, career and life planning.
  • develop an increasingly positive attitude toward self concept and the career process.
  • access career material/job information sites through the Internet .

Exams

 

There are 2 proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
