SOC 266: Minority Group Relations (3 Credits) |
Professor: Jennifer Lerner |
Overview |
|
Race relations have been a key part of American and world history, and race and ethnicity affect many more aspects of our lives than we might initially believe. In this course, we will examine race and ethnicity in the United States, considering where we are today, how we got there, and how we might improve race relations for the future. You will alsolearn about race and ethnicity in this course through a variety of activities, including textbook readings, films, online discussions, papers and other written exercises, web explorations, and experiential projects.
Entry Level Competencies: There are no prerequisites for taking this course. However, you will need to have several important skills to succeed in this course: organizational skills; ability to work independently; willingness to ask for help; and college-level reading and writing skills.

The required textbook for this course is:
-
Charles Gallagher (ed.), Rethinking the Color Line: Readings in Race and Ethnicity, 3rd edition (McGraw-Hill Publishers)
-
Besides the textbook, there will be no other required materials to purchase. However, if you are new to online courses, you might want to also review some advice on succeeding in the online environment. A good text for this purpose is Ryan Watkins and Michael Corry, E-learning Companion: A Student's Guide to Online Success. I have not ordered this for the class so you will not see it listed when you go to the link above to order your course textbook, but you can find it at various online booksellers if you are interested. You can also borrow the book from NOVA's library.
