VET 133: Clinical Pathology III (3 Credits)
Overview

You must have been accepted to the online veterinary technology program at NVCC and be program placed in order to take this course. This course will cover concepts in veterinary parasitology, cytology, and pathology.

Requires signing up for two on-campus lab sessions. You must attend both lab sessions in order to pass the course. Campus lab visits dates to be announced in Blackboard.

Objectives
 

Once completed, the student will have covered the following topics:

  • Identification of common parasites of domesticated animals
  • Be familiar with the life cycles of common parasites of domesticated animals
  • Be aware of parasitic zoonoses and how to prevent them
  • Understand the rationale for treatment techniques of parasitic infections
  • Be able to perform tests required to identify parasitic infections in animals
  • Perform cytological slide preparations from various types of specimens
  • Be able to identify cell types and other microscopic elements on cytological preparations
  • Understand the technician’s role in necropsy procedure
  • Be aware of proper necropsy procedure
  • How to properly handle various pathology specimens
  • Be familiar with the services provided by the regional animal health lab of their area

  • Clean white lab coat.
  • Gloves (fitted, not loose).

Your course grade will be determined by completing course assignments, according to the following percentages:

  • 20% Assignments and Task list
  • 20% Lab activities
  • 20% Cytology and Pathology Exam
  • 30% Parasitology Exam
  • 5% Documentation of Necropsy case
  • 5% Documentation of Regional Animal Health Laboratory Tour

Your final grade will be based on the following scale. You must attend both lab sessions in order to pass the course.
