You must have been accepted to the online veterinary technology program at NVCC and be program placed in order to take this course. This course is designed to acquaint the veterinary technician student with the more common disease conditions of the individual body systems of companion animals : the dog and cat. The etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, public health significance and the role of the veterinary technician will be covered.
The following are recommended for entry into this course:
- Vet 105 Introduction to Veterinary Technology
- Vet 111 Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals
- Vet 116 Breeds and Behavior
- Vet 121 Clinical Practices I
- Math 126 Mathematics for Allied Health

Objectives |
|
If you do well in this course, you will be able to:
- List the major causes of infectious and noninfectious diseases in the dog and cat
- Recognize the diseased animal by alterations in normal behavior and physical appearance
- List, by systems, the typical signs of disease displayed by affected animals
- Describe the common laboratory tests and techniques involved in diagnosis
- List the common zoonotic agents and their significance
- Describe a program for the optimal prevention and control of disease in the dog and cat
- Describe the technician's role in the management of the diseases presented
- Provide the client education involved for the diseases presented
