VET 217: Introduction to Laboratory, Zoo & Wildlife Medicine (2 Credits)
Overview

This course will acquaint the student with a general knowledge of laboratory, zoo and wild animals. This will include, but not be limited to, basic husbandry, behavior, restraint and common disease conditions; orphan care will also be presented.  Focuses on the identification, captive management, restraint and diseases of fish, reptiles, birds, rodents, rabbits, ferrets, primates, wild carnivores and wild herbivores

Prerequisites and level of preparation expected to succeed in this course:

  • You should have completed all of the VET classes with a C or better. Only open to students program placed in Veterinary Technology.
  • This course should be taken only after successful completion of all previous VET courses

Objectives
 

If you complete this course and do well:

  • Students will learn to identify, restrain and collect samples from common laboratory and exotic animals.
  • The student will understand behavioral characteristics of the common laboratory and exotic animals.
  • The student will learn the special nutritional requirements and common diseases of laboratory and exotic animals.
  • The student will be able to design a care and feeding program for an orphaned animal.
  • The student will be presented a basic understanding of the care and common problems of aquarium fishes.
  • The student will be presented information so that they can contact organizations with expertise in handling, rearing and rehabilitating exotic and wild animal species.

Exotic skills and techniques - you will be required to complete and document proficiency by photo, video or direct observation by an instructor a number of required skills to be completed on mice, rats, rabbits and birds.
Pass/Fail
Zoo field trip - we are setting up a field trip to the National Zoo or possibly the Conservation Center in April (date TBA).   If for some reason you cannot attend the field trip, then you will be required to arrange to visit a zoo, wildlife rehabilitation or conservation center on your own prior to the end of the semester.   Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
Pass/Fail

Your final grade may be based on the following scale. Please note that you should pass both exams in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.
