Overview

This course will cover the dentistry unit of our curriculum which includes the basic dental care of the dog, cat, and horse

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of universal precautions
  • Be familiar with dental nomenclature
  • Know the normal oral anatomy of the dog, cat, and horse
  • Perform dental charting using the anatomical and modified Triadan methods
  • Be able to identify dental instruments and their usage
  • Demonstrate proper technique in the use of the probe/explorer
  • Demonstrate proper technique of hand scaling, subgingival curettage, and root planing
  • Demonstrate the proper technique in use of power scalers and polishers
  • Proper care and maintenance of dental instruments
  • Have an awareness of dental ergonomics
  • Be able to perform the sequence of dental prophylaxis for dogs and cats
  • Understand the dental prophylaxis care of the equine
  • Recognize the common signs of dental disease
  • Perform dental home care of the dog and cat
  • Be aware of various extraction techniques
  • Understand how to perform intraoral dental radiography for the dog or cat
  • Understand how to provide local block anesthesia to oral structures

Materials

 

In addition to the required texts, you are also required to have:

Lab Materials:

  • cap
  • mask
  • protective eyewear (safety glasses or mask with face shield ok, you don’t need chemistry goggles)
  • pair of surgical gloves properly fitted for you
  • lab smock
