GENERAL BIOLOGY POLICIES
Instructor : Emma Erdahl
Phone: 845-6506 (Office) Office: Room 352
Office Hours: Tuesday & Thursday - 1:30 - 4:30
1. Attendance:
Regular attendance is expected. Please be on time. If you do arrive late because of an
unavoidable circumstance, please do not disturb others when you join the class.
2. Withdrawal from class:
A student may withdraw, without penalty, from the course through October 29, 2001. After
October 29 there will be no withdrawals from the course unless the drop/add form is
accompanied by a written petition to the instructor. If the petition is not made or if the
petition is not approved, the student will receive an "F".
3. Course Resource Materials:
Text: Life , 4rd Edition, Ricki Lewis (2002)
General Biology Study Guide and Laboratory Manual, 8th Edition (2000)
Class Web Site http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/bio101eli/default.htm
The Study Guide, both a laboratory manual and course
guide, is frequently used in the lecture. Please bring it to class. The course is
structured into units of study and is not based on any one textbook, but on the study
guide objectives.
The class web site includes web resources, practice quizzes, the Internet Projects, and
weekly notes.
4. Course Evaluation (Grading):
The lecture grade is based on 6 quizzes, 2 special projects, and a final comprehensive
exam. The tests are generally multiple choice questions and one or two short answer essay
questions. All quizzes are given at the beginning of the class period. If you are late to
class, you will be required to turn in your paper at the same time as students that
arrived on time.

The dates of all activities are listed on the syllabus. The
lecture grade is 70% of the total grade; lab is 30% of the total grade. A passing grade
must be received in the laboratory in order to pass the course.
A = 100-90% B =
89% - 80% C = 79% - 70%
D = 69% - 60%
below 60% = F
5. Help! Lots of help is available; make use of it!
 | My office hours (see above). If you are unable to come
during these hours, please discuss this with me and we will arrange a time that is
mutually convenient. It is important to do this early in the semester. |
 | Videos and practice quizzes. In addition to the text, study
guide, and class lectures, I have developed videos on topics that students sometimes find
difficult. These videos are on reserve in the library. Even if you aren't having problems,
you may find them helpful for either review or if you have missed a class. The video list
is on the class web site. Also, at the class web site, you will find practice quizzes for
each unit. |
 | Alexandria Campus Tutoring Service. Contact Ms. Alice
Hadley, Coordinator of Tutoring Service, in Counseling. Again, early in the semester is
the key. |
 | Learning Disabilities? Contact either Ms. Rebeccah Garcia in
Counseling for information on how to document your special needs. In order to receive
special accommodations, I must receive a Disability Data Sheet from Counseling. |
6. Academic Dishonesty:
Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Plagiarism
is defined in the NVCC Student Handbook as follows:
This is the act of appropriating passages from the work of
another individual, either word for word or in substance, and representing them as one's
own work. This includes any submission of written work other than one's own.
Academic dishonesty on any class activity will result in a
zero for the work. A second offense will result in an F in the course.
7. Make-up Quizzes and Late Work:
Quizzes may not be made-up except in extremely unusual and documented circumstances.
If a quiz is missed, that will be the quiz that is dropped when your grade is calculated.
Internet Projects handed in late will lose 10% for each class period they are late.
Quizzes or Internet Projects postponed because of the school closing due to inclement
weather will be given/due the following class meeting.
8. Schedule:
If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what material was covered
in your absence. The schedule that you received is the basic guide for the course.
However, this schedule is not set in concrete. Based on class work, we may take more or
less time on any given topic. Thus, if you miss a class, it is imperative that you keep
yourself informed of what was accomplished.
