Textbook:  Life,  4th Edition, Ricky Lewis et al., 2001

Study Guide:  General Biology Study Guide and Laboratory Manual,
Wise, Mary F. et. al., 2000.

The Study Guide, which is both a laboratory manual and course guide, is  structured into units of study.  The lecture portion of Biology 101 covers the first seven units in the guide (Bio 102 consists of Units 8 - 16).  The Biology 101 laboratory exercises are located immediately after Unit 16.  Each unit contains the basic objectives that you are expected to master along with aids to assist you in the mastery of the objectives.  If you examine either the general schedule or the detailed weekly schedule, you will note that the objectives are keyed to the related pages in the textbook.  Thus, the textbook expands on the objectives as well as offering additional aids (especially the artwork) and problems for mastering the objectives.  All quizzes and exams are based on the study guide objectives.

Biology Video Tapes: There are thirteen videotapes that correspond to the topics that students find most difficult in Biology 101.  Each video tape is 30 minutes in length.   Videotapes that correspond to a given topic are noted in both the general schedule and the detailed weekly schedule.  Note: This is not a video course! Watching the videos is an optional resource that you may find helpful if you are experiencing difficulty with a given topic or have missed a lecture.

Web Resources:  Answers to the study guide questions ( a password is required)  and practice quizzes are tools that should be used routinely.  In addition, the BioWeb will be used for two special web projects as well as links to biology resources on the web and biology happenings in the Washington Metro area.
