Biology 101 Course Materials

Textbook:  Campbell, N.A.; Mitchell, L.G.; and Reece, J.B.  Biology: Concepts and Connections, 4th Edition Addison Wesley & Benjamin Cummings, 080536627X
Study Guide:  Erdahl, E. and Wise, M. ELI General Biology Study Guide and Laboratory Manual, 3rd Edition Pearson Publishing Co. 2003.
Video: In addition to the textbook and Study Guide, this course also requires viewing fourteen 30-minute videos. See TV Schedule.

You can buy the text and study guide at any of the NVCC bookstores or order them by mail.  Buying your books by mail takes time, so do it immediately.   Before traveling to the bookstore, call ahead to confirm that your books are in stock.

The Study Guide, which is both a laboratory manual and course guide, is  structured into units of study.  The lecture portion of Biology 101 covers the first seven units in the guide. (Bio 102 covers Units 8 -16). The Bio 101 laboratory exercises begin immediately after Unit 7.   Each unit contains the basic objectives that you are expected to master along with aids to assist you in their mastery of the objectives.  If you examine either the general schedule or the detailed weekly schedule, you will note that the objectives are keyed to the related pages in the textbook.  Thus, the textbook expands on the objectives as well as offering additional aids (especially the artwork) and problems for mastering the objectives.  All quizzes and exams are based on the study guide objectives.
