Do these excerpts from Columbus' log provide us with any useful information about the native societies of these islands? For example, what? Cite specific evidence. For the final exam, I ask that you read excerpts from the log of Columbus' journeys in 1492. Although the original logs do not survive, historians do have access to summarized/abridged versions of the logs. Your assignment for the final exam is much similar to your assignment for the midterm exam and for the feudalism paragraph. In both those cases you were given documents and asked to analyze those documents to reveal information about the existing society that produced the documents. You have essentially the same assignment on the final exam with the exception that the document you are analyzing for information about the native society was, in this case, not produced by the native society but by an outsider, a European. And thus it is not surprising that the authorship of the document, in this case, accounts for some of the peculiarities and inherent biases of the document. Still the Columbus' logs are extremely important for historians because they are a record of the first contact between Europeans and Native Americans. As you write your essay, and please remember that you cannot take notes into the testing center but you will be provided with a copy of the text for use while taking your exam, please remember to include a clear introduction that outlines your essay and remember that each paragraph in your essay should correspond to a particular point that you are trying to make. As with the midterm exam, please do not just rewrite the story but instead provide analysis of the information to reveal information about the native society. For example, if you can find information in the logs that allows you to reach some level of understanding about the religious beliefs of the native societies, that should be one of your points of analysis included in your essay.
