TOPIC ABSTRACT: This is a one-page, typed
paper (double-spaced, one-inch margins) that explains the purpose of the
proposed research paper: what is the topic; why the topic was selected;
what sources are possibly available; how the paper will be structured.
Much of this will be speculative at this point in time, but it is a necessary
beginning. Some points that you will like to consider:
- Brief project description (what do you
plan to do?):
- Project site/setting (where and with
whom will you work?):
- Major question (s) you plan to answer/goal
(s) you hope to achieve:
- Products/results (What will be the measurable
outcome of your project?):
- Resources needed (What do you need in
order to do an excellent job?):
- Calendar of component tasks (When will
you complete each part of the project?):
- Your main concern/question about the
project:
ARTICLE ABSTRACT: This is a one-page paper
that summarizes the contents of an article from a major historical journal.
The article that you choose to summarize must be at least ten pages in
length and must relate to your proposed topic. Suggested journals include:
American Historical Review, Journal of European Economic History,
Journal
of the History of Ideas, Journal of Modern History, Journal
of Social History,
Past and Present and Slavic Review.
Your summary (typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins with name, date and
COMPLETE bibliographic citation at the top left of e page) should concisely
summarize the contents of the article and indicate the author's thesis.
It is important that you begin your essay with an introductory paragraph
and follow proper rules of English usage. See the examples from the HIS 101 class.
PRELIMINARY BIBLIOGRAPHY: This is a list,
typed, one-inch margins, of possible sources to be used in writing the
paper. Please follow the guidelines for a bibliography in Turabian.
BOOK ABSTRACT: This is a two-page, typed
paper that summarizes the contents of a book that you will be using in
writing your paper. The instructions for the article abstract also apply.
OUTLINE and PAPER INTRODUCTION: This is
the topic paragraph for the paper and a detailed outline of the proposed
paper.
REVISED BIBLIOGRAPHY: This is a formal,
complete bibliography. Typed, one-inch margins and formatted according
to the exact directions found in Turabian.
PAPER DRAFTS: Typed, one-inch margins,
page numbers. The drafts should be increasingly lengthy and more detailed.
The second draft should, in essence, be the final draft before the last
details are added.
PAPER: The final paper must be typed, double-spaced,
with one-inch margins and page numbers, at least twenty pages in length
and include a cover page and bibliography. Either endnotes or footnotes
may be used. Students must follow the style of either Turabian or the Chicago
Manual of Style.
