HIS 242
Introduction and Themes in Russian History
remarks by Professor Evans

Russian Birch Trees in winter OK, you should go back and read what I wrote as an introduction for HIS 241.  All that is still valid as an introduction for HIS 242, but I would like to add one specific word for our study of twentieth-century Russia, "death."  It is hard to conceptualize just how many Russians died in the man-inflicted catastrophes of the twentieth century (See Matthew White's website on Man-Made Megadeaths of the Twentieth century), which might even reach the figure of 100 million.
